Excursion and Trips around Jimena de la Frontera

Whilst there are many interesting cities to visit in Andalucia to include Seville, Cádiz, Jerez, Cordoba and Granada they are some distance away. Below we suggest some more local excursions.

Ronda – by car or train

Ronda is famous for its spectacular gorge and views and can be visited either by car or by train from Estación de Jimena. It is just over an hour by car to Ronda from Jimena via Gaucin. The train journey takes a little longer but is spectacular and relaxing. The train times can be viewed on Renfe website

Gaucin (30 mins)

Gaucin is a quiet white hilltop village with a number of bars offering food and tapas. Do not drive into Gaucin and make sure you have a map. Places to head for include Casa Antonio, in the square by the six gargoyle fountains, café-bar El Puente which has a terrace with views and the bar at Plaza de la Fuente.

Casares  is another spectacular white hilltop village around 20 minutes drive from Gaucin. From there you can return to Jimena via the coast.

El Colmenar – by car or train

El Colmenar, also known as Estación de Gaucin (although it is several kilometres uphill to Gaucin) is a small ordinary Spanish village with a number of bars and restaurants for those wishing to sample traditional local fare. There are two restaurants by the station as you enter the village (Bar España and Las Flores) and also one hidden away behind the latter (Rincón del Cani) which is entered via a local’s bar. On the way to Colmenar by car, as you descend the winding road you pass a hotel (Hacienda la Herriza), which can be a welcome place for a drink. By the bridge as you enter Colmenar, and also further downstream, there are clear pools ideal for a swimming and which are safe for children. If you are ambitious there is a rugged walk of around 45 minutes to Cañón de la Buitreras (Vulture Canyon) which is a spectacular natural monument.
